Solar physics research: advancement with SOLAR-C and Hinode

Details of research theme

【Individual Research】

With observations from new space-borne and ground-based facilities and theoretical studies coordinated with Hinode, applicants are expected to advance research on solar physics and its related field. The research topics can be selected depending on applicants' interests and experience but links to future SOLAR-C science shall be considered. Applicants are expected to take active roles in coordinating Hinode with new international space-borne and ground-based facilities, such as DKIST and Solar Orbiter, and with theoretical studies. For such coordinated activities, applicants make contributions to on-orbit scientific operations of the Hinode.

【JAXA Project】

Applicants are required to contribute to the SOLAR-C project toward further advancement. By participating in the development efforts of mission instrument technology relating to SOLAR-C and/or in the preparation of scientific operations and data processing, applicants are expected to contribute in studies relating to mission performance and evaluations to characterize the telescope hardware performance and to maximize scientific outputs. Through these studies, applicants will obtain abilities to lead scientific planning that allow applicants to expand his/her research with SOLAR-C.

【Human resources development unique to ISAS 】

Applicants will experience almost all the phases of the mission, from the development of hardware (SOLAR-C) to on-orbit operations (Hinode). These activities help applicants to understand how to develop and operate satellites and to acquire properties of satellite and mission instruments, to prepare for coordinating SOLAR-C with other observations and theoretical studies, leading to the development of young researchers with leadership in SOLAR-C scientific operations and research.

<Scope of change in work> None

(If there is a change beyond the work related to the above work content, the contract will be revised)

Required abilities, qualities, and experience

Research experiences and good knowledge on solar physics or its relevant research field are required for applicants. Research should make contributions to further improvements on our knowledge on the Sun. Applicants are expected to promote his/her research based on observations including Hinode and have an incentive to expand his/her researches to more widely by newly coordinating various data with Hinode research. Moreover, those who have strong will to push next generation space solar physics forward through the development of flight hardware and ground planning/processing are highly welcomed.

Research environment after arriving at one’s post.

The computers at ISAS allow researchers to access all the Hinode data online. For hardware development, it is possible to use various test facilities in ISAS as well as in NAOJ, a partner for the SOLAR-C development. Researchers will receive research support from ISAS solar physics group (Department of Solar System Sciences, SOLAR-C Project) and NAOJ group. Collaborative works with US and European team members for SOLAR-C and Hinode can be launched easily because of international mission.
