Details of research theme

【Title of research theme】

Study of the inner heliosphere and planetary environment with the BepiColombo mission

BepiColombo is a large-scale joint mission to Mercury by ESA and JAXA that will deliver two spacecraft, Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (Mio) to Mercury orbit in 2025. Mio will perform a comprehensive survey of the environment around Mercury with its suite of plasma instruments, a sodium exosphere spectral imager, and a dust monitor. The objective of this research is to :
1) study the inner heliosphere and planetary environment by using the latest data acquired by Mio and MPO during its interplanetary cruise. Data products from the MESSENGER and other solar system missions, and/or modelling and simulations shall be combined as necessary.
2) Participate in activities such as operations planning, science data processing, and contribute to advancing the project.

Required abilities, qualities, and experience

(1) The applicant is expected to have a research background in solar system science, especially solar wind and planetary plasma physics.

(2) It is preferable to have experience in data analysis obtained by an instrument onboard a spacecraft.
(3) Is able to actively engage in discussions with other researchers in the international science community.

Any restrictions/disadvantages for non-native Japanese speakers?

A conversational level of English or Japanese is sufficient to conduct/supervise the research activities. Routine project meetings are basically carried out in Japanese, therefore, support and follow-up will be provided when necessary.

Research environment after arriving at one’s post.

MURAKAMI Go, JAXA BepiColombo Project Scientist, will be the main supervisor. Other researchers participating in BepiColombo and/or other planetary missions at ISAS can also supervise according to the research theme.
