Details of research theme

【Title of research theme】

Analysis of remote sensing data and tool development for planetary/moon/asteroidal exploration

[Own research]

This project performs analysis of remote sensing data obtained by ongoing (e.g., Hayabusa-2, OSIRIS-REx, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter) and previous (e.g., Kaguya, Mars Global Surveyor) planetary missions to understand geologic processes affecting planetary/asteroidal surfaces. The specific geologic processes are categorized and further generalized from the viewpoint of comparative planetology.

[JAXA project contribution]
This project endeavors to develop remote sensing data analytical tools, which will eventually contribute to future JAXA's missions such as MMX, SLIM, and DESTINY+. This project will also maximize the scientific output of future planetary missions by joining science observation plans and data analysis plans.

Required abilities, qualities, and experience

(1) Strong background and experience in VIS-NIR spectroscopy, neutron and gamma-ray spectroscopy, or related remote sensing tools for planetary exploration.

(2) Mentality and communication skills to work with international partners for JAXA’s planetary missions.

Any restrictions/disadvantages for non-native Japanese speakers?

English or Japanese communication skill is indispensable.

Research environment after arriving at one’s post.

The successful candidate is mentored and supported by staff at the Department of Solar System Sciences and is encouraged to collaborate with research staff in other departments at JAXA. We encourage him/her to join the team meeting and seminars. The team will provide the computing machinery necessary for the project and support travels for workshops and conferences.
