Research on Flyby Guidance, Navigation, and Control, Flyby Candidate Selection...

Details of research theme

【Title of Research Theme】
Research on Flyby Guidance, Navigation, and Control, Flyby Candidate Selection, and Operational Planning to Realize Multiple Flyby

【Details of research theme】
ISAS/JAXA has a strategy to explore small bodies deeply and widely by combining sample return and multiple flyby missions. DESTINY+, which is scheduled for launch in 2024, will play a key role in this strategy, and realizes multiple flyby as its extended mission. For the multiple flyby mission, it is necessary to select flyby candidates and develop an operation plan to maximize the scientific results, taking into account the constraints imposed by the DESTINY+ spacecraft system and operation. Therefore, this study promotes cutting-edge academic research on "flyby control," "flyby candidate selection," and "autonomous control" as keywords, and studies and examines how these can be used for DESTINY+'s extended mission. In addition, the researcher is also expected to carry out the research and study to generate synergy with future flyby missions such as Comet Interceptor, which will follow DESTINY+.

Required abilities, qualities, and experience

(1) Expertise in flyby control and mission analysis.
(2) Be able to communicate smoothly with domestic and international researchers and DESTINY+ project members to promote joint research.
(3) Experience in design, development, evaluation, operation, and analysis of satellites or spacecraft is desirable.

After the arrival, the mentor will play a central role in providing guidance, especially in cooperation with researchers inside and outside of JAXA. In particular, the Flyby Operation Working Team within JAXA (approximately 10 members as of June 2022) holds regular meetings once a week, providing a forum for sharing research progress and information. In addition to these regular meetings, the mentor plans to provide a forum for discussion once a week. In addition, a room, workstations for numerical analysis (shared), and MATLAB software (licensed within JAXA) will be provided for the students to conduct their research.
