GAPS: ultrasensitive observation of cosmic-ray antiparticles

Details of research theme

【Individual Research】
As a member of the GAPS collaboration, the successful candidate will carry out scientific investigations in astroparticle physics, e.g., dark matter, cosmic-ray propagation, and solar modulation, but also consider future directions beyond the current GAPS program.


【JAXA Project】
In cooperation with GAPS members, the successful candidate will produce scientific outcomes by analyzing the first GAPS flight dataset, and carry out related developments to maximize achievements expected from the second and subsequent GAPS flights.


【Human Resource Development Unique to ISAS 】
Research and development for GAPS in Japan is mainly led by ISAS staff members. ISAS has facilities and equipment, such as thermal and vacuum chambers, to carry out various tests required for balloon flight. ISAS has diverse personnel resources in science and engineering fields who are highly experienced in scientific balloon missions and Antarctic experiments. These resources will enable efficient and productive research.


【Human Resources We Aim to Develop】
The successful candidate can go through a project cycle such as system development, data acquisition, and science analysis. Collaborating with international GAPS members will provide valuable knowledge and experience. We expect the successful candidate to develop their strengths through this project as a next-generation leader in the field.

Required abilities， qualities， and experience

・Required: Ph.D. in physics or a related discipline. Ability to work cooperatively.
・Desired: Experience in hardware development. Basic proficiency in English.

Ratios（Project Contribution）

50%

Research environment after arriving at one’s post.

・Basic resources for research, such as desk space and a PC, will be supplied.
・Presentations at academic meetings will be encouraged.
・If approved, the successful candidate can participate in the GAPS collaboration meetings and instrument integration in the US.

・Contract of employment will be concluded each fiscal year.
・Applicants will not be hired as a permanent employee after the term of service.
・Employment period may be extended up to 3 years for the longest, in consideration of research evaluation every fiscal year.

・Annual Income
　Approximately JPY 5,900,000

　* May change due to the recommendation by the Natl. Personnel Authority.
・Benefits
　Commuting, Housing, Achievement, Year-end allowances.
・Research funding
　Researcher may receive research funding specific to such individual.(However, this depends on the budget.)

Selection Schedule

The result of the first selection will be announced by the Middle-Late September, 2026.(Scheduled to be held around September 24th)

Online Interview: Middle-October, 2026.(Scheduled to be held around October 16th)
