Development research for HiZ-GUNDAM satellite ...

Details of research theme

【Title of Research Theme】

Development research for HiZ-GUNDAM satellite (High-z Gamma-ray bursts for Unraveling the Dark Ages Mission)

[Study based on individual interests]
Astrophysical researches on gamma-ray bursts and gravitational wave objects based on electromagnetic wave observations from space, or developments of observation instrument aimed at mounting on a satellite. A research advisor provides guidance in collaboration with other faculty members in the department of space astronomy and astrophysics.
[JAXA project]
HiZ-GUNDAM is a satellite project under pre-study for launch around 2030. To elucidate the scientific issues of the the epoch of reionization in early universe and compact object phenomena, the on-board wide-field X-ray monitors captures the appearance of astronomical events such as gamma-ray bursts and gravitational wave origins, a follow-up observation using the on-board cooled telescope at visible/near-infrared bands, and alert information will be sent to ground observation facilities. This research theme focuses on development researches of mission instruments for the HiZ-GUNDAM satellite and studies of satellite systems and mission's science cases. Specifically, the development of X-ray or near-infrared sensors, the alignment and performance evaluations of lobster eye optics prototypes using an X-ray beamline facility, etc., the cooling optical test evaluation of visible/near-infrared telescopes prototypes, which are defined based on the experience and ability of applicants. Through this research program, we aim to train human resources who can lead future missions of time-domain astrophysics or X-ray/infrared astronomy.

Required abilities,qualities, and experience

One of the following experiences is desirable:
(1) Experience of working on the development of astronomical observation instruments for satellites or ground-based telescopes
(2) Experience in developing or evaluating X-ray/infrared imaging detectors
(3) Experience in experimental research related to this research in the field of physics experiments
