Development of infrared hyperspectral microscope for astromaterials.

Details of research theme

This study aims at development of infrared hyperspectral microscope for astromaterials including the returned samples, meteorites and interplanetary dust particles. Currently in the Curation Facility, French-built MicrOmega is used for the initial descriptions of samples returned from C-type asteroid Ryugu, but its wavelength range is limited so that the accuracy of description is highly constrained. This study targets the extension of wavelength to ca. 5 µm to improve the observations of many species accurately. Not only the samples of Hayabusa2, the samples from B-type asteroid Bennu by OSIRIS-REx (to be received in 2024 by MoU) will be applied. This instrument will be also used for D-type asteroid like Martian satellite by MMX to be returned in 2029.
